Yowzer! What a trip writing this was. I wanted to give up and move on, but Tess refused to let me get away with that. She insisted she had a story to tell. I finally sat her down and told her that she had to open up to me or I was throwing the story in the trash. She spilled her guts and I got my book published. The great thing about being a writer is when you hear voices, you call them characters, and you don't get hauled off to the loony bin.
This series is set in my home town, Sisters, Oregon. There's this over-sized Victorian building that houses something like an insurance agent, retail furniture, and who knows what else. I don't really pay attention, because to me, ever since I moved here almost six years ago, I see a bed and breakfast and tea house. That's the other great thing about being a writer, you get to re-imagine businesses. The clean air (when it's not covered in forest fire smoke), daily views of majestic sunrises and sunsets, calendar worthy scenes of the mountains and farms, and friendly people made this a perfect setting for Tess and her crew.
One of the biggest issues I had with this book was trying to reign in Molly. She has a mouth on her like a gangster, but this is a cozy mystery and isn't supposed to have a lot of foul language. We finally found somewhat of a common ground and hopefully everyone can feel her authenticity without being offended.
Once in a while though, one or more of my characters really surprises me. I mean, I'll spend the rest of the day, week, or month going, what the...? Let's see if you can figure out where a certain character pulled a fast one.
Join me for a cup of tea. I'll relax and be glad I made it through to the end and you can begin your adventurous stay at the Tumbleweed Tea B&B.
